GAMBLING MANIA!

“APART FROM BEING CONSUMED THESE DAYS BY SEPTEMBER 11TH, OUR ENTIRE NATION IS ON ANOTHER NATIONAL SPREE. A SPREE THAT IS EFFECTIVELY RUINING AND EVEN BANKRUPTING PEOPLE OF EVERY AGE AND GENERATION.”

I’m Dennis Finnan, host and speaker on the World, the Word & You! Broadcast and in a moment we’ll talk about the gambling mania sweeping our nation…

…Let’s face it, we are a nation of gamblers! According to the Public Gaming Research Institute, Inc., America’s annual total of gambling from all sources is estimated to be between $ 500 BILLION to $1 TRILLION dollars annually! This includes all forms of legal and illegal gambling such as Las Vegas style casino gambling, state lotteries, college and sports wagering, Internet gambling, Indian gambling, race track gambling, poker and card gambling, and even church bingo and raffle gambling! These all fall into three categories ľ social gambling, professional gambling and governmental gambling. Social gambling can further be divided into legal and illegal gambling. Do you know that with the newest form of gambling, Internet gambling, an estimated ONE BILLION dollars is spent annually on this illegal form of wagering; that is, according to the House Subcommittee on Crime, which held hearings on November 1st, 2001. Now, just how bad is this addiction, and worse, what’s happening to many Christians these days who seem to feel nothing is wrong with it as long as it is recreational? Well after our second moment of music, I want to remind us all of what God has to say about all forms of gambling and what you should do about it personally and nationally as well. So don’t go away, this information is important for you, our nation and the world!..

…Not let’s be honest and forthright at the beginning. As a Christian minister, I know for a fact that the Bible does not speak directly on the issue of gambling, but I truly believe that the Scriptures do speak of many principles of condemnation and generalizations that address the issue plain enough. So let’s begin.

WHAT IS GAMBLING?

\Well simply, it is “the transference of money, property or other valuables on the basis of the chance, bypassing God’s normal means of acquiring it.” Now, what is God’s approved means of acquiring wealth, goods or property? The answer is three-fold:

(1)   Old fashioned performance of work or service

(2)   family inheritance, or

(3)   by gift.

On the other hand, gambling is “the seeking of reallocating of wealth of another on the basis of deliberate risk, involving immediate gain to one party at the loss of another.” The determining process always involves risk by the element of chance.

WHY DO PEOPLE GAMBLE?

The answers are varied, but they fall into general categories such as:

(1) POVERTY - So many live near or below the poverty line and feel by gambling there is a possibility to get great wealth from a small investment of wagering. Unfortunately, gambling appeals strongly to the poor more than any other group who least can afford to waste their money on such foolish means.

(2) GREED – Yes, millions of people worldwide gamble because deep down inside is the insatiable desire for more! Especially to get it by an easy and quick means.

(3) RECREATIONAL – It is here most excuse their participation in all forms of gambling from State Lotteries, sports wagering, internet gambling to church bingo games. Unfortunately, our states have become the devil’s advocate and encourage gambling from young and old alike. This is where many Christians fall prey and come to believe it is just fun and recreational entertainment.

(4) COMPULSION – Medical and psychological experts now understand that gambling is strikingly similar to a drug habit, and creates a psychological addiction known as compulsive gambling. Compulsive gamblers begin in the other forms and progress to this final form, where they actually physically and psychologically get “high” on it and actually have withdrawal symptoms if they stop. No price is too steep to pay to wager any money they can find or get, to attempt to win at gambling. This addiction will cause the compulsive gambler to do virtually anything to get money to gamble.

As a result of these four reasons for gambling, America has turned to gambling in increasing numbers, and even Christians are beginning to see nothing wrong with it. Virtually, our government now is in the gambling business and encourages young and old alike to become a gambler. Now let’s get down to what the Bible has to say about gambling in all the forms you can find it.

THE BIBLE’S TEACHING ON GAMBLING

Again as I said earlier, it would be nice to see a commandment in the Bible that says, “Thou shalt not gamble.” But, in reality it is not there. However, just because we don’t have an actual commandment doesn’t mean the Bible is silent on the issue. Gambling has existed in every society since the beginning of man. Moreover, gambling has in most generations been universally condemned. The ancient Greeks considered it detrimental to the order of the State, the ancient Egyptians thought it made men effeminate. But our modern society has not followed. By 1970, in America, gambling became an interest of the state to gain funding for their projects without direct taxation. Yet everyone who claims the Name of Jesus Christ needs to seriously consider what the Bible says about it, regardless of whether it a socially accepted pastime for recreational fun. So here are some biblical concepts and truths for you to consider about the wrongness and sinfulness of gambling.

(1) THE CREATION IN WHICH WE LIVE AND HAVE OUR BEING IS NOT ONE OF CHANCE, BUT DECENCY AND ORDER - The gambler’s worldview and the Christian or God’s worldview in this regard are totally opposite. All that the Bible says about God’s divine order and principles of life, are opposed to “chance” taking. From this first concept, we can see gambling is a denial of faith in God’s ordered universe by its appeal to blind chance, motivated by neither love or rectitude. The Bible warns against trying “fortune” to gain a lucrative “destiny” in this world.

Isa 65:11-12 (NNAS)  “”But you who forsake the LORD… Who set a table for Fortune, And who fill cups with mixed wine for Destiny  you did evil in My sight And chose that in which I did not delight.””

(2) ALL NORMAL ADVANCEMENT OF LIFE, ACCORDING TO GOD, IS BASED ON PRODUCTIVE WHOLESOME WORK OR SERVICE – The Bible is clear here for we read in the Scriptures,

Gen 3:19 (NNAS)  “By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.””

2 Th 3:10 (NNAS)  “For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.”

From the beginning of mankind to this day, God has called us to work for our living, honestly and faithfully, not trying to get another’s wealth at their expense. Gambling is non-productive activity geared to greedily gain another’s wealth at their personal expense. The Protestant work ethic is still alive according to God, although strained in many societies around the world these days. If you gamble, you must come to realize it is because you want to usurp God’s means of gaining wealth, with a lack of love for those from whom you want to take it. Thirdly,

(3) THE BIBLE SAYS THE DESIRE TO GET-RICH-QUICK IS COVETEOUSNESS AND SIN!

The 8th and 10th commandments make clear that sinful man desire sinful means of obtaining what others may have. We read in Scripture,

Exo 20:15-17 (NNAS)  “”You shall not steal…  17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.””

Why even the Lord Jesus warned us to be careful not to allow our sinful nature to burst forth with its covetous spirit. He said,

Luke 12:15 (NNAS)  “… Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.””

Paul the apostle warned Timothy a young preacher,

1 Tim 6:10 (NNAS)  “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

You see, the inordinate desire for money, goods and wealth is the sin of covetousness God hates. It is also the source or stream that leads to breaking every other commandment. The grasping spirit is in opposition to all God wants to see in your life and mine, and in every nation that serves His people. The covetous spirit is one that can never be satisfied. This is what a compulsive gambler experiences, whether it is attending bingo parlors, or the racetrack or the convenience store lottery machines. Such as no place in the life of one who claims the Name of Christ.

However the greatest violation of ALL forms of gambling is, it breaks God’s greatest command and will for all humanity. What is this? It is to “love” your neighbor. The greatest commandment of God for His children is found in,

Luke 10:27 (NNAS)  “And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.””

This is the true golden rule. We are our brother’s keeper. We cannot knowingly inflict a loss of his or her wealth in the greedy chance of winning it way from them by any means. Gambling manipulates people for personal profit at their expense as they try to do to others. It fosters a spirit of greed, a lack of love, and selfishness at the highest level. So, what’s a Christian to do? Well here are some suggestions:

  1. DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY FORMS OF GAMBLING, RECREATIONAL OR NOT. Yes, don’t be party to promoting and providing others, means to sin against God and their fellow man. If you don’t play, the gaming cannot increase.
  2. IF YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN GAMBLING, IMMEDIATELY STOP AND CONFESS IT AS SIN. God can heal the avarice spirit and keep you from going down that path that leads to compulsion and ruin. It does come for most who continue in it.
  3. WORK TO BETTER EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AROUND YOU OF THE WRONGNESS OF GAMBLING AND THE FACT THAT IT RUINS SOCIETY. Friend, there are enough facts and truth to prove this. Just seek out the organizations that speak against gambling, who will give you the bold facts and hard statistics.
  4. WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN, STATE AND FEDERAL, AND TELL THEM YOU AE AGAINST GAMBLING FOR IT DOES NOT BUILD THE NATION, RATHER DESTROYS IT. Yes, be active politically in your local community as well as nationally to rid your state of its lotteries, and control the gambling mania that is sweeping our nation. You can change things if you are proactive and speak out.
  5. PRAY AND ASK GOD TO CHANGE THE HEARTS OF THOSE AFFLICTED WITH GAMBLING. Indeed, prayer works! If God’s people would pray for the Lord to intervene, I believe God will answer. However, since so many Christians are indifferent or participating in this gambling fever, God cannot and will not answer.

Now in light of all these things, never forget the greatest power to change the heart of a gambler is the power of Jesus Christ. If you know someone who is steeped in gambling and helplessly addicted, the greatest power in the universe is at his or her fingertips to change. It is to accept Jesus Christ into the heart and life. The Bible says God alone can change the heart and stop every addiction that afflicts us. But, one must seek the Lord and turn wholly to Him. What does this mean? Here’s a simple plan of reconciliation to God, everyone must turn to if one wants God’s blessings in this life and eternity. First of all realize, God has given us a book called the Bible. It is His instruction manual for all life He has created. It tells us how to live rightly before God. It tells us how to avoid things of life, which are harmful, destructive, painful and wrong. Listen to God's Word, which says,

1.  HEAVEN IS A FREE GIFT, IT IS NOT EARNED OR DESERVED
Contrary to popular opinion and thought, God's Word clearly declares that Heaven is not something we work for or earn. God says Heaven or Eternal Life can only be obtained as a free gift! The Bible says,
Romans 6:23 "…, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Secondly, Scripture continues to tell us,

2. MAN IS A SINNER AND CANNOT SAVE HIMSELF
The Bad News about all people is we must face the fact that the human race now exists in a defective and damaged state. The Bible describes our condition as sinful, and disobedient in His sight. Of course, everyone knows this by virtue of our world's existence. Our wars, conflicts, fightings, crime, and our “gambling mania,” testify that people cannot live in a continued state of peace, tranquility, love and happiness. This is because we willfully have chosen to live outside of God's directives and will, for our existence. The Bible calls this disobedience, sin. We read in,
Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Isaiah 53:6 "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way..."

Yes, no matter how much you strive to do good, no matter how much good you have done, we have also been disobedient to God's standard of living worthy of entering Heaven and receiving Eternal Life. In fact, the Bible tells us what that standard is. Jesus Christ said in,
Matthew 5:48 "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Imagine that! Only that which is perfect, flawless and exactly like God Himself can live and exist in His eternal presence. This of course, eliminates all of us, for all have sinned and come short of this perfection. Now the problem of man trying to save himself comes into sharper focus when we understand what the Bible says about God.

3. GOD IS LOVE, BUT HE IS ALSO JUST AND MUST PUNISH SIN
The Good News in the Bible is the God who created us reveals Himself to be a loving God who is deeply concerned about you and me. The greatest verse and proof of this is found in,
John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. {17} For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
Yes, the love of God is so great, that it reveals God devised a plan to save us from the penalty of our sins that await all of us on Judgment Day. This plan involves the justice and holiness of God. The Bible reveals God must punish sin! God says by sinning, large or small, we have earned His penalty of the universe, which is death. This means we deserve to die and be separated from God forever. This is bad news indeed, but hold on!  God is love and doesn't want to punish us, so God devised a plan to save all men.

4. GOD SENT US HIS SON TO DIE FOR YOU AND ME
Romans 5:8 " But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
As amazing as it seems, God tells us He Himself came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. His mission was to be a perfect man without sin, so as to qualify himself, as a man, to be our substitute and die for our sins. This act of God's love and substitutionary payment for our sins is a recorded fact of history. On a cross almost 2000 years ago, a legal transaction took place where God punished the infinite God/Man Jesus Christ for the sins of us all. Yes, the plain truth of the matter is, Christ died for you and for me! This is the Good News of the Bible God wants you to know. However, there is something more you must know and understand.

5. GOD'S FORGIVENESS IS CONDITIONAL UPON FAITH
Although millions of people have tried to earn Heaven or Eternal Life, God says that Christ's death for our sins can be placed to our sin account, only by faith. Listen to the Word of God,
Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- {9} not by works, so that no one can boast."
There is no good work, religious rite, sacrament or penance we can perform that will bring us to Heaven or grant us Eternal Life. God declares only “faith in Christ” can save us.  But what is faith? Today the best word for faith is simply "trust." We must trust God's Word and message is true, and we must trust in Jesus Christ alone for our salvation, eternal life. Any other way to Heaven will find the door barred for eternity. The Bible unconditionally says,
Acts 4:12 "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
This means that God's gift of forgiveness of all our sins, His gift of Eternal Life and Heaven itself, and deliverance from the sins that beset us will only be given to those who believe God and His Word and place their lives under the loving control of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Does this make sense to you? Would you like to receive the full forgiveness of your sins, God’s gift of Eternal Life, and the power to overcome controlling sin in your life? If God is speaking to your heart about this, there is only one right and immediate response. Your prayer of faith.

A SUGGESTED PRAYER OF FAITH
"Dear God, I realize I am a sinner. I know my sin deserves to be punished. I now believe Jesus Christ died for me and rose from the grave. I place my trust in Christ alone as my Savior and grant Him the right to lead my life. Thank you for dying for me, and granting to me through faith alone, the free gift of forgiveness and eternal life. In Jesus' name, Amen."
If you prayed this prayer with all sincerity, then know what Jesus says to all who come to Him by faith,
John 5:24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."
God can and will save anyone regardless of what their sin is, but you must come to Him, seeking His Son Jesus Christ. That is the answer to the gambling mania sweeping our nation. May God so open hearts today.
