CLEAN WATER!

“HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE SUBSTANCE IN THE WORLD? IS IT PLATINUM, SILVER, GOLD, OR  DIAMONDS? THE ANSWER SURPRISINGLY IS NONE OF THESE…”

I’m Dennis Finnan, host and speaker on the World, the Word & You! Broadcast and in a moment we’ll talk about the most valuable but common substance in the world, which is our “water”…

…WATER! What a common substance, yet without it our world and everything in it would cease to exist. Basically, water is the amazing compound of oxygen and hydrogen and is the most stable of all chemical elements on the earth. Yet this combination of the earth’s elements is just right to serve the needs of life on this planet. However, if one examines it closely, they will undoubtedly find that it is a miracle substance that virtually exists nowhere else in the universe in the form and abundance our single planet is blessed with. Now water comes in a variety of forms. We find it in a solid forms such as frozen, and snow. We find it in a gaseous form such as vapor and steam, and most useful of all, we find it in liquid form to meet the life sustaining needs of every living thing on our planet called Earth. How is it this substance, the most valuable in all the world, is so freely available to us all and continues to be down through the ages? The answer in one word is – GOD! Yes, water is a miracle substance which presence can only be explained by the existence of our powerful Creator God who made it and placed it here for us to live and exist. So, in another moment, we’ll talk technically about it and marvel at God’s miracle of miracles, the abundance and work of water in our world, I’ll return to fascinate you with its very existence…

…Today were talking about “Water!” Water is the common name applied to the liquid state of the hydrogen-oxygen compound H2O. Ancient philosophers regarded water as a basic element typifying all liquid substances, but it wasn’t until the latter half of the 18th century that it was proved to be a compound substance. Earth’s water as the saying goes… “water, water everywhere,” is quite a true saying! Although there are places on the earth where surface drinking water is scarce, for the most part it is everywhere and in every form. For instance, in the frozen form water make life much easier. For instance, it can cool us down on a hot day by evaporating in the air, or air-condition our living and working establishments by  such a mechanical process. In the form of snow, it provides the earth with a blanket that stores billions of gallons of water on the surface of mountains and plains for use in hot times when surface water is scarce. In the liquid form, rain feeds the world’s life-forms from plants and vegetables, to the fish of lakes and seas, to the beasts and cattle that creep along the surface, to God’s highest creation the world of humanity. Yes, water is our life, for without it our world, and every living thing would cease to exist.

Moreover, our planet Earth does the most fantastic balancing act with water! Water continually moves around, through and above the earth. From water vapor, liquid water and ice, water continually changes its forms. Amazingly too, all the water on the earth is never lost. Water simply changes into one of its forms and back again to its original form. You see, the Earth is a closed system like a terrarium. It neither gains nor loses much matter including water. Thanks to what scientists have discovered as the “water cycle,” the same water that sustains us, that we drink and use for our life and living, is the same water people have used since the creation of the world. In fact, the water you drink and wash with is actually the same water Adam and Eve used to live out their lives in the beginning of the creation of time and all things.

Now what’s so amazing about water? Well, let me tell you. Scientists say water is the closest thing to a universal solvent, for it dissolves almost everything, except sand and rocks. You see God designed it as a cleansing agent to help us and not to destroy us. For this reason, the ocean waters maintain the shorelines of the earth, minus simple erosion by winds and waves. Moreover, seawater is 800 times heavier than the air, yet when the sun and its heat vaporize it, it changes form and becomes lighter than air and is drawn up into the sky and atmosphere. Amazingly, in the process, it leaves behind all its undrinkable salt. If it didn’t do this, all plant life would die from the salient rain which would be deposited in lakes and rivers of the world. Now thinking about that, the Bible says,

Gen 1:6-7 (NASB)  Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.

When God first created the planet earth, He created it a water world! The entire surface of the earth was covered with water He created. God made this unique substance to be in abundance for the life He was to create afterward. But then, in the formation of creation God separated the waters into oceans, streams lakes, rivers and the atmospheric clouds. The seas, lakes, and rivers of the earth would sustain all life, while the clouds of the sky contained water vapor, which shielded all life forms from the harmful rays of the hot burning sun and its destructive ultraviolet radiation it emits. Amazing isn’t it, that water is found in the same forms today as it was at creation. Now most amazingly of all, is what we call the “Water Cycle.” As you know, about 70% of the Earth is covered by water. Water exists in the oceans, lakes, streams and rivers of the world’s surface, but also under the ground too, as soil moisture and in aquifers. Thanks to the “Water Cycle” God created for its existence, our planet’s water needs and supply is constantly replenishing itself by moving from one place to another and from one form to another. Have you ever wondered where the water in streams, lakes and rivers comes from? Well, it comes from our salty seas! As the sun shines on the surface of the vast oceans, it evaporates millions of tons of water, about 5,435 tons of water per square mile of ocean surface. This water in the form of vapor, a gaseous state, rises to considerable heights in the atmosphere and then by the winds of the earth is moved across continents to the living land areas of all life. When this warm vapor-saturated air cools, it condenses into innumerable tiny droplets of liquid water so small that about 8 million are needed to make a single drop of rain! As this condensation occurs clouds are formed, and as the air cools, the tiny droplets fuse into larger drops until the air cannot hold this heavy weight and the clouds drop it on the needy dry earth.

Now let me ask you. How could such a thing and process as water and its cycling, naturally and randomly occur? What an ingenious plan for water to cooperate with the sun, the wind, and the atmosphere to completely and continuously nourish the earth’s surface again and again in just the right amounts, to keep it lush with vegetation and life?

To the evolutionist who doesn’t believe in a Creator God, for them it is just a happenstance chance, a mathematical accident. Really now… If one further examines the water cycle we discover that once dropped onto the needy earth, it gathers on the surface in lakes, streams, and rivers all around the world. Another amazing miracle is that all the fresh water sources of the earth drain back into the seas. The giant rivers of the world replenish the seas with water, the used water of the earth, only to again be cleansed and sent forth to fill them with fresh water for life to live by. All this my friend, cannot be explained except that it is the intelligent design of an omnipotent Creator who made it so! The prophet Isaiah once declared,

Isa 40:12 (NLT)  Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed out the mountains and the hills?

Do you realize what the Bible says here? Yes, God “measured” and formed the mountains and hills to be the exact means through gravity to return the waters of the surface of the earth back to the seas for its process of maintaining life. Do you know that scientists now tell us that the percentages of water and dry land is a perfect balance for this process to work correctly? Yes, 29% of the earth is dry land and 71% is water, the exact right combination to work, as Isaiah declared, God measured it out in the creation of our world.

Indeed, the earth is a life giving, and sustaining machine, that God produced to care for all life He created, especially the life of His highest and finest creation, the human being. We are further told in,

Gen 1:26-28 (NASB)  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 And God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God wants us to know that this planet is here for two reasons -  (1) It is our home God created for us to live in and on. This is why we haven’t found anywhere in the galaxies or universe any planet like ours, with the abundance of water needed to sustain life.

Now that leads us to the question, “Why did God create life and sustain it as He has for so many centuries with the wondrous and marvelous methods we see around us?” The Bible answers this for us.

Gen 1:1 (NASB)  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Gen 1:24 (NASB)  Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so.

Gen 1:27 (NASB)  And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Gen 5:1 (NASB)  “… In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

Psa 148:4-5 (NASB)  Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created.

You see the whole earth and universe for that matter was also (2) created for the glory and pleasure of God. In return, God expects all creation to praise Him for it. Yes, everything in the universe obeys God, except God higher creatures, angels and men. The Bible tells us that God planned for both angels and men to be created in His likeness. That likeness entailed a creature capable of having a free will to determine its own fate and way of life. This was a dangerous thing to do, but God knew that without it, mankind and the angelic world could not truly praise God and be thankful for all God made. In the process, God planned to allow us to decide wither we wanted to worship, praise and serve the living Creator God. Sadly, the Bible reveals men and angels chose not to worship, love and adore the Creator who gave us all such wonderful life.

Now, water is but one of many gifts God gave us without price. Water sustains us, and enables us to live and enjoy life. Water is the most valuable substance in the universe and God made sure we would never run out of it in His home He created for us. Now in the United States alone, we use more than 321 billion gallons of water per day of surface water and 77 billion per day of ground water. What an enormous amount! But then what an abundant supply God, has given us without price. Yet, there is something even greater God has given us without price. It is our salvation in Christ. The Bible reminds us all,

Rom 6:23 (NASB)  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Yes, note those fantastic words ¾ the “gift of God is eternal life.” The very life of God is promised to all humanity as God’s greatest gift. Now water is absolutely essential for physical life, but God’s greatest gift of eternal life is absolutely essential for our afterlife to exist and live forever in the presence of God Himself.

In fact, the Bible goes into great detail that the life we now live here on the Earth, is but temporary and transitory. Since we were created in God’s image, the real you and me, a soul and spirit housed in an earth suit, called the body, one day will leave this environment, and go to either of two eternal places – a place called Heaven, God’s home and abode, or a place called Hell, the penitentiary of those who refused God’s free gift of eternal life.

Now how does one get eternal life? Is it earned by something we must do? Well, the world’s religions cry out you must “do” this or that to earn it! Yet, the Judeo-Christian Bible and its inerrant words from God cry out – “It is DONE!” Yes, on the cross of Calvary where Jesus Christ died, the last words He uttered were “Telelastai.” Now, this is a unique Greek phrase that can be translated, “It is finished,” but better translated, “THE DEBT IS PAID!”

The Lord Jesus Christ cried out on the cross that He alone paid for the sins of the world, there on that cross where He died. From there, God the Father punished Jesus, the God Man, for the sins of every human being to ever live. There, God in the flesh of a human being died in substitution for the wages of sin, which is death to every soul and spirit created in the image of God that will live on forever and ever. Now, just as the Water Cycle on the Earth replenishes the CLEAN PHYSICAL WATER of LIFE for us, so the Lord Jesus cleanses us from our sins when we accept and receive Him as our Lord God and Savior. God speaks from the Old Testament and the New..

Isa 1:18 (NASB)  “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.

Heb 9:13-14 (NASB)  For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Yes as water cleans the earth and all that lives upon it, so God’s Son by His death on the cross, cleans away the sin stained lives of sinners who repent, and come to Him confessing their sins and calling upon Jesus Christ to wash them clean.

Mat 11:28 (NASB)  “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.

As one looks at the earth and sees the abundance of water, and the processes whereby God distributes it and cleans it for us to drink and live by, water is only one of God’s great miracle gifts. The greatest gift of all is the forgiveness of sins brought to us by the soul cleansing power of the blood death of Christ on the cross. Have you been washed by this blood of your sins? King David of old cried out

Psa 51:1-7 (NIV)  “... Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts ; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Say friend, have you been washed clean not by the wonderful water of the earth, but by the blood death of Christ on the cross? Only that work can blot out the stain of our sins, and only that can grant us God’s free gift of eternal life.  Now, Jesus said to a Samaritan woman at a well for water,

John 4:10-14 (NASB)  Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 She said^ to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Friend have you drank from this water of life? Have you taken the Lord Jesus into your life and heart to cleanse and sustain your soul and spirit? That is the real issue of water and its value. God gave it in abundance and free to all, to picture for us His greater free gift to all of the water of life. All who drink from it, will live forever, in God’s presence and joy. This water my friend is found only in and through Jesus Christ, His death, burial and resurrection, which you receive when you bow your heart and life to accept Him as your Savior and Lord. Make it so today, right now wherever you are, and that life-sustaining spiritual and clean water will flow in and through you for all eternity…

…Yes, clean water is a marvelous miracle substance and process on and in the earth. Not only does the water cycle sustain us, but in winter when the seas and lakes and rivers freeze over, water turns to ice. God made sure ice was lighter than water to maintain the liquidity of the oceans and bodes of water that maintain the fish of the seas. It insulates them from the extreme cold that if ice were heavier than water would sink to the bottom, thus destroying all life forms within. Indeed, water is God’s signature of His power, greatness and presence. To think water is here by some mathematical accident is the most absurd thing! It is another way whereby God reminds us to seek Him through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. May you surely be a recipient of His clean water of life.
